The ear of Vincent Van Gogh

After a long period of constant invitation Gauguin eventually arrived in Arles in October 1888. The two have worked together throughout the end of October, November and every part of December. Gauguin painted "The Painter of Sunflowers: The portrait of Van Gogh" Van Gogh painted "chair Van Gogh" and "Gauguin's chair, they exercised collective painting and art discussed. Or more accurately, has argued and fought fiercely about art – Christmas and New Year are coming and bringing the end of the relationship of two geniuses in trouble "with them. The crisis peaked 23 of December 1888.

In that time the mental health of Van Gogh – because of his lifestyle – have continued to deteriorate: he was subjected to frequent episodes of depression and sadness caused by a metabolic disorder. At night, he suffered one of these enhanced by the fear that Gauguin was going to quit for good. According to the official version, this night is van Gogh lived an extraordinary mental breakdown or was substantially evaporation from poisoned by lead paint. The information tracked events have been collected in an exclusive source – Gauguin.

According to one version, told by the modern primitivism, first in his memoir "Before and After" written in Tahiti at the end of the century He made his way across the Place Victor Hugo, when he heard unfamiliar fast and nervous behind him. He turned and saw Van Gogh turned on him with a razor blade in his hand. He looked at van Gogh, and it suddenly turned and fled, because search of Gauguin "must have been very powerful."

After Van Gogh returned to the Yellow House and cut off his left ear as a whole (as part of testimony), or the lower part of his ear lobe left (according to another part of testimony). After washing his ears, wrapped fabric cut into a log and covered his head with beret height (or some other hats), he went to the brothel № 1 (as indicated by the local newspaper "The Republican Forum") has requested a prostitute named Rachel and handed him her plot with words

"Keep this object carefully" (these words are reproduced in all accounts on episode), returned to the yellow house and went to a blood-soaked bed. Later, van Gogh has been in hospital, was released in January but because of his delusions and hallucinations was constant under the constant supervision of Dr. Rey, the hospital of Arles. In June 1889, he pledged to

the psychiatric asylym located in the town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, 32 km from Arles. Paul Gauguin visits in Paris and never saw van Gogh in his life – despite the request of Van Gogh to visit him in hospital.

The story of Paul Gauguin does not seem very reliable. In fact, there were at least two of them being first told the painter Emile Bernard immediately after return from Paris who revealed details of their fall, the relationship horrible description of the legacy of van Gogh self harm and slightly different description the central episode of the night. Van Gogh, Gauguin run after (he left the house) and said: "You're quiet, but I am too." Gauguin went to the hotel and van Gogh returned to the yellow house.

The best film about Vincent Van Gogh is not one of the many biopics of the painter, but this stirring, ardent documentary. Forgoing a conventional biography’s and-then-he-cut-his-ear-off approach, the gifted Dutch-Australian director Paul Cox opts for pure evocation: he trails his camera through the places where Van Gogh walked, as though trying to dream his way into the artist’s mindset.
