Our Real Honeymoon

08/08/2008

It’s been over six years since Sarah and I were married back in May of 2002. Back then, we didn’t have any jobs, with no sense of direction where God would take us. We were just excited and in love.

Our honeymoon was a simple trip to Florida, with passes from Dad to fly standby on Southwest. We used up our entire savings of around $900 for hotels, a car rental, and food. While we had a good time, we were constantly stressed about what we were going to do once we got back from the honeymoon. And in a sense, we were a little jealous that we couldn’t afford to take the exotic trips to Mexico, Europe and the Carribean that all our friends were taking.

So we decided that in the future, we’ll take a real honeymoon. Now, six years later, we’ll get the chance to do just that this fall.

Through the use of air miles and credit card points, we’re going to Maroma Beach on the Riviera Mayan Peninsula in Mexico. We’ll be staying at the brand-new all-inclusive Secrets Maroma Beach Resort, which when researching, Sarah woke me up in the middle of the night thinking it might be a swingers resort. It’s not.

Initially, I didn’t want to do the all-inclusive deal. I wanted to go down to Costa Rica and do one of the surf camps. But I guess that’s not as romantic. So since I owed Sarah a romantic honeymoon, I figured I better go all-out.

I did a bit of research and decided to go here on the tiny island of Canoaun in the Carribean. But it literally would’ve taken two full days to get there based on our free air miles. And as much as we wanted to do something as amazing as this place, that added four days to our trip and we didn’t want to be away from the girls that long. I guess we’ll save this place for our 20th Anniversary.

We finally ended up deciding to go down to Mexico for five nights. Maroma Beach was voted at one point by the Travel Channel as one of the best beaches in the world. And while there is no surfing, I figured maybe we can try scuba diving instead. We’ll see.

But overall, I’m glad it all turned out this way…from starting out our marriage with nothing to where we are today. It’s been a wonderful journey and I amazed with the family God has blessed me with.

This time around, I hope we can just relax, enjoy each other and just thank our Saviour for His grace in our lives. Of course, drinking all the Mexican Beer and Margarita’s I want will definitely help.

I love you Sarah. Always have, always will.
