For some reason, Ross Perot jumped into my head the other day. I wondered what life in America would be like today if Americans were smart enough to have voted him into office in 1996.
1996 was the year of Bill Clinton vs Bob Dole. While Partisan Americans voted party lines like they always do, Ross Perot fought hard with his charts in hand and managed to get quite a few people to notice. His charts are even on the internet today.
Perot was a champion of balancing the budget and the consequences of failing to do so. He warned us about the future and potential problems. And now today, as a result of not listening to Ross Perot, we are in the midst of trying to borrow our way out of a recession.
Indeed, what would life like be today if Ross Perot had been elected? Would our budget be balanced and our national debt be shrinking instead of rising? Would he have been re-elected, thus avoiding a Bush presidency all-together?
As we go through our credit and energy crisis, I really think our biggest mistake was not electing Ross Perot in 1996. He had the foresight, knowledge and experience to tackle and prevent the problems we are having today.
For some reason, Americans ignored his warnings and re-elected another professional politician. But really, Americans have been great at that for the past twenty years. They always seem to choose the worst possible candidates to run for President. This year is no different.
