iPhone

07/05/2007

Last Saturday Night, Sarah and I headed up to the Apple Store to play around with the iPhone. Up until then, I kept making such a big deal about the iPhone and how cool it looked. Sarah patiently played along, but just kind of rolled her eyes. But after playing with it, she immediately said, “Matt, you gotta buy one of these! It’s so cool!” But we didn’t buy one that night, even though they had a few left in stock.

I had a few reservations. But after thinking them out, I decided that it did make sense to go ahead and buy the iPhone. A few days later and a few phone calls to see what store actually had the 8gb in stock, we got one.

After playing with it for a few days, the keyboard has become addicting. At first it was a bit difficult, but once I got the hang of it and trusted the auto-spelling feature, it’s quite easy to cruise along.

The screen is so bright that you don’t see any smudge marks from your fingers. And the touch screen interface works well. I can easily pull up numbers with one hand and enter them in with one hand.

The clarity of the cell phone is amazing. It’s much clearer than my old cell phone. But I do wish the speaker would get a bit louder. It’s hard to hear at times…maybe it just my ears though.

The internet is great, even on AT&T’s Edge. But I’m used to slow internet speeds in Midlothian because I can’t get high-speed internet in my area yet unless I want to shell out $90 a month for satellite access.

I’ve had a couple of freeze’s surfing the internet. I was in Home Depot yesterday and couldn’t find a particular product. So I thought I would fire up HomeDepot.com to see if they actually carried it. And it froze. But I’ve had trouble with HomeDepot.com on Safari with my actual Mac before as well.

I wish I could delete multiple emails at one time. I wish I could copy and paste. I wish I could do several other things. And I’m sure this will come with updates.

But overall, this is an amazing device. It’s a computer in your pocket. And it’s well worth the price. Apple once again has taken old technology and transformed it into something new and exciting, but more important, more user-friendly with access to almost everything your computer can do.

I thought I read somewhere that though it can open word or excel files, it can’t modify them. True?

I want one as well! probably going to wait, since it isn’t a need, but I will soon join the revolution!
