The Birth

We woke up at 5:00 am on Tuesday morning, the 10th, and arrived at the hospital at 5:45 am. Inducement started at 7:00 am and the doctor broke Sarah’s water at noon. The anesthesiologist came in at 1:00 pm to give the eperderal. For the first few hours, it worked well. But then, around 5:00 pm, it started to go away. The anesthesiologist came in again to mess with it, but couldn’t get it working properly.

At this point, Sarah was dilated to a seven. In order to give birth, you must be dilated to a 10. Sarah was really in pain from the contractions that were happening consistently every two minutes or so. Finally the anesthesiologist decided to we would have to redo the eperderal. The nurse looked at Sarah and saw that she was now almost dilated to a 10. Sarah didn’t want to redo the eperderal and the Doctor decided to go ahead and have Sarah start pushing at 7:00 pm.

Two hours later, after much pushing and pain, Abbie was born at 9:01 pm – 7’9’’ and 20’’ long. I was very proud of Sarah and the amazing job she did having to deal with the eperderal failing and having to push for two hours. It was a miracle watching this baby come out of my wife. Even now, it still doesn’t feel real.

We stayed at the hospital for two days, and just this afternoon came home. It feels good to be away from a little hospital and in the comforts of home. So far, it’s been good. Little sleep and trying to figure out how this baby stuff works.
