I was listening to ESPN radio the other day and they were talking about steriod abuse in baseball and the pressure to succeed.
One of the announcers brought up a very interesting idea. These baseball players are basically ending their lives five years short in order to win the lottery (aka, get those multi-million dollar contracts). I thought it was a very interesting observation.
So the question is, would you die five years early in order to win the lottery? And if you just don’t want to win the lottery, would you die five years early in order to be one of the best in your occupation?

Sure. The last five years probably aren’t that exciting anyway.

well it’s one thing to say you wouldn’t want to live the last five years of your life, another to say everything ends earlier. Saying you’re going to lop five years off your life is to say you get old five years sooner, your eyes go bad, you start getting sicker and have to use a walker, all five years sooner. That’s the question.
Me? no, i’m not going to play God, I’d prefer to let things play out like they are going to already.

I’ve actually had someone offer a similar proposition to me once, and ever since I’ve been trying to bargain back my soul. Can you guess his name?
