Texans Ban Marriage

11/09/2005

Yesterday, in an attempt to ban gay marriage, Texans ended up voting to ban marriage altogether. The following was actually added to our constitution:

Sec. 32. (a) Marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman.
(b) This state or a political subdivision of this state may not create or recognize any legal status identical or similar to marriage.

Can you believe that…This state may not create or recognize any legal status identical or similar to marriage! Our politicians haven’t been the brightest bunch. And Texans were worried about activist judges…

The wording of that in no way bans marriage. That’s just what the anti-amendment people were trying to use to scare people into voting against it.

Notice the exacting wording: legal status. It bans the creation or recognition of the status identical to marriage, not the institution of marriage itself.

Yes, it is an exaggeration. But the wording is very poor and leaves interpretation wide open…Now, will homosexuals and such be able to get married through an interpretation of this amendment? No. But, since some view marriage as a contract to share property and wealth, this amendment could come up in various lawsuits.

By the way, did you vote?

Nope. Unfortunately I didn’t vote. I’ve been on my deathbed the past week, and outside of what little hours they let me work, I’ve been lying around trying to sleep.
