Bit Head
What kind of bit is good for a head strong horse?
I ride western. My last 2 mares where very soft , this new horse is very hard. I tried him with a hack and he ran through it. I used a soft curve, tom-thumb and he still bolted. I was told to find a stronger bit, but I’m not sure what that would be. The tom-thumb was a tiny bit better, but not much. What is a little stronger then a tom-thumb? I don’t want to pull on him too much.
Look into the Mikmar training bit. My gelding, who is not headstrong, absolutely LOVES that bit, even over a very mild snaffle. It looks like something you’d pull out of a garbage can but there is a lot of science in the making of that bit. I think it sits very comfortably in the horses mouth…it is a lightweight, slanted mouthpiece with a roller in the middle. There is a rope that goes through the bit, it runs over the horses nose (similar to a hackamore but not quite) and it runs through the bit and you attach the reins to that. The effect is that the horse has opportunity to respond to nose pressure before any mouth pressure is applied. I think this is a great reward system for the horse to self educate. The bits are NOT very pretty…they are not show legal. They are expensive. But they truly do wonders.
